Solar installation has a much higher barrier to entry than most home service trades — it sits at the intersection of electrical work, roofing, and increasingly complex permitting and utility interconnection rules. That's actually good news for someone willing to do it right: it keeps out casual competition. Here's what's actually involved.

Licensing comes first, not last

In most states, installing a grid-tied solar system requires an electrical contractor's license, either held directly or through a licensed electrician on staff — this isn't optional the way some general contracting is. Requirements vary: some states have a dedicated solar contractor license (California's C-46 Solar classification, for example), while others require a general electrical (C-10) or general contractor license with solar work performed under it. Check your state contractor licensing board before you take a single deposit — unlicensed electrical work on a home is one of the fastest ways to end a business before it starts.

NABCEP certification is the industry credibility marker

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certification isn't legally required in most places, but it's become the de facto standard customers, lenders, and some utilities look for. A PV Installation Professional certification signals real competency and often speeds up permitting and financing approval. Plan on pursuing it early even if you can legally operate without it.

Understand the real system components

A typical residential system is 6-10 kW, using 350-450W panels (roughly 16-24 panels), paired with either a string inverter or microinverters (one per panel — more expensive but better for partially shaded roofs), racking/mounting hardware rated for local wind and snow loads, and increasingly a battery (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, or similar) for backup or time-of-use optimization. Know the tradeoffs between these options cold — customers will ask.

Permitting and interconnection are half the job

Unlike most trades, solar isn't done when the panels are on the roof — you need a permit from the local building/electrical authority, an inspection, and an interconnection agreement with the utility before the system can legally operate (turn on). Utility interconnection timelines vary wildly by region — from a couple weeks to several months — and this is the part new solar businesses consistently underestimate when quoting timelines to customers.

Startup costs are higher than most trades

Beyond tools (specialized electrical meters, a solar-rated harness and fall protection gear, racking installation tools), expect to need working capital to front equipment costs before customer financing or payment comes through — a single residential system's equipment cost can run $10,000-$20,000, and you're often paying suppliers before the customer's loan or cash payment clears.

Where first customers come from

  • Federal and state incentives drive demand — the 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit is the single biggest driver of homeowner interest; know it cold and be able to explain it accurately.
  • Financing partnerships matter enormously — most residential solar is financed (loan, lease, or PPA), so relationships with solar-specific lenders can make or break your close rate.
  • Local reputation and reviews carry more weight than in most trades because it's a five-figure decision — invest early in doing a small number of jobs exceptionally well and documented.
