Insurance and Licensing Basics for Solar Installation Businesses

Solar installation carries more regulatory weight than most home service trades because it combines electrical work, roofing, and grid interconnection — all areas with real safety stakes if done wrong. Here's what to actually have in place.

Electrical contractor licensing is usually required, not optional

In most states, connecting a solar system to a home's electrical panel and the grid requires work performed by, or under, a licensed electrician or electrical contractor. Some states have a dedicated solar-specific license (California's C-46 Solar contractor classification is a well-known example); others fold solar work into a general electrical (C-10-equivalent) license. A handful of states have looser requirements, but "no license needed for solar" is a dangerous assumption to make without checking directly with your state contractor licensing board — unlicensed electrical work on a grid-tied system is a serious liability exposure, not a technicality.

NABCEP certification, while often not legally mandatory, functions as a real requirement

The NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification has become the practical standard the industry, many lenders, and some state incentive programs expect. In some states or utility programs, NABCEP certification (or an equivalent) is a prerequisite for customers to access certain rebates or for you to be listed as an approved installer — so even where it's not a legal license requirement, it can be a business requirement.

General liability insurance, at higher limits than most trades

Given the value of the equipment installed and the potential for real property damage (roof leaks from improper mounting, electrical fire risk, fall damage), solar installers typically carry $1M-$2M in general liability coverage, and many commercial or larger residential jobs require proof of $2M+ before you can even bid. Expect premiums higher than a typical home service trade, reflecting real risk exposure.

Workers' compensation is essential, not just required

Rooftop work carries serious injury risk — falls are the leading cause of construction fatalities, and solar installation is rooftop work by definition. Workers' comp is required in nearly every state once you have employees, and given the fall risk specifically, this is coverage you should treat as core to how you run the business, not paperwork to minimize.

Errors and omissions (E&O) coverage is worth strong consideration

Because solar installers make production estimates, financing recommendations, and system sizing decisions that directly affect a customer's expected savings, E&O coverage protecting against claims of financial harm from inaccurate projections is increasingly common and worth carrying, especially as system costs and customer expectations both rise.

Bonding requirements vary by state

Some states require a contractor's license bond as a condition of licensing (amounts vary widely). Check whether your state ties bonding specifically to your electrical or solar contractor classification.

OSHA fall protection compliance isn't optional paperwork

Beyond insurance, OSHA fall protection standards apply directly to rooftop solar work — proper harnesses, anchor points, and guardrail or safety net systems where required. This is enforced, inspected, and genuinely protects your crew — treat compliance as operational, not bureaucratic.

Keep documentation ready and current

Between the license, NABCEP certification, insurance certificates, and bonding, solar customers, financing partners, and utility interconnection applications will all ask for proof at different points. Keeping current, digital copies of everything ready to send — rather than tracking them down under deadline pressure during a permit application — saves real time on every single job.
